Memorial Liberation Wilrijk

This memorial was erected on 9 September 2009 and pays tribute to the British regiment Royal Artillery - 107 Heavy anti-aircraft that liberated Wilrijk on 4 September 1944 and to German Major Wilhelm Metzger.

The major was the commander of Fort 7 and charged with managing the ammunition depot for the German Luftwaffe; he was ordered at the end of August 1944 to immediately blow up the ammunition depot. At his own risk, he ignored this order.
