Pillbox Anzio

The shoreline that had been selected by the allied forces for the amphibian landing at Anzio (called Operation Shingle) was in fact not fortressed. Still a number of pillboxes had been placed along the coastal road. The largest one in that area had been built right in front of the church in Nettuno. These pillboxes have been demolished and cleared away one by one in the course of the past years. On request of the Lions Club in Anzio-Nettuno in 1976 the last pillbox has been preserved in order to serve as a memorial dedicated to "the eternal peace". The outstanding monument has been made by the sculptor Amerigo Tot.
