War Memorial Hemelum

The memorial monument can be found on the Himmelbrink in Hemelum. The text on the sign at the monument reads:

The large aluminum tubes represent the two fallen: S. Sijtsma and Y.B. Yntema, two residents of Hemelum who were shot shortly before the liberation. The tubes fell into a V shape. The 'V' of freedom, focused on the freedom that you can see so beautifully from this place.

The tubes around it symbolize those they left behind, but are arranged in such a way that the large tubes do not fall over. So don't be forgotten. They support the memory of them.

Round stones have been bricked in with unobtrusive colors around the pipes. They represent the people who worked during the war for people in hiding, pilots. etc .. Inconspicuous people often so inconspicuous stones.

This part is enclosed by the top ring. The mosaic composition indicates the colorful world of today. School children and adults have been allowed to portray their thoughts in freedom. This part is again enclosed by the second ring with underneath the band with the following text: "surrounded with our thoughts they live on".
