On the monument it is written:
"At this place on June 6th, 1944, early in the morning, a group of 150 American paratroopers coming from the west, started its progression throughout the vicinity of Pouppeville in order to seiz Causeway n°1. At the crossroads, Major Lawrence Legere's thight was hit by an enemy bullit and falling on the ground. T/S Edwin Hohl left his position and raced towards the wounded officer. As he knelt beside him, the young medic (20years) was killed by a bullet in the chest although he was wearing a Red Cross Bracelet. MAY WE NEVER FORGET"

At the crossroads, the thigh of Major Lawrence Legere was hit by an enemy bullet and fell to the ground. T/S Edwin Hohl left his position and ran to the wounded officer. While kneeling next to him, the young medic (20 years old) was killed by a bullet in the chest, although he wore a Red Cross bracelet. MAY WE NEVER FORGET"
He was awarded a Purple Heart, and was later buried in his hometown of Williamsville in Erie County, New York, USA
