War Memorial Cheratte

Monument in commemoration of milatry and civilian victims of the municipality of Cheratte during the first and second Worldwar.

At this memorial (photo 4) also Mathieu Steenebrugen is commemorated.

He was shot bij the Germans on September 5th 1944 when the Germans were retreating. He was a boy of only 16 years old. They shot him as rataliation for the resistance the German retreating army met, on September 5th 1944.

Mathieu Steenebrugen is burried at the cemetery of the town of Cheratte. Aproxmately 7 km from the site he was killed.
