Belgian Wargrave Mathieu Stenebrugen Cheratte

Tomb of Cross Mathieu Stenebrugen

He was shot at Wandre (Liège) as rataliation for the resistance the German retreating army met, on September 5th 1944.

7 days before the war ended for Wandre.

Mathieu Stenebrugen was only 16 years old. Born in Wandre. According to his tombstone he left mother, father and brothers/ siters.

Why he was picked out remains a question. What danger could the Germans have feared from a 16 years old boy, nearing the end of the war?

A sad story.

Mathieu is rembered with a monument on the location of his execution in Wandre. Aproxmately 7 km from his last resting place. At the monument the date of death is September 5th 1944. Also the name is spelled als Steenebrugen.

He also is remebred at the monument in front of the former townhal of the town of Cheratte. (Right panel, second from the bottem).
