Memorial Waal River Crossing

The Plaque "De Oversteek" in Lent commemorates the spot where American soldiers crossed the Waal River on 20-9-1944 during Operation Market Garden.

The text on the plaque reads:

"FROM THIS SPOT PARATROOPERS FROM THE 3RD BATTALION, 504TH REGIMENT OF THE 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION FEARLESSLY CROSSED THE WAAL IN VULNERABLE BOATS ON SEPTEMBER 20TH, 1944. MANY DID NOT REACH THE OTHER SIDE. THE SURVIVORS SUCCEEDED IN SECURING THE BRIDGES ON THE NORTH BANK. NIJMEGEN COULD NOW BE LIBERATED. WE SALUTE THEIR HEROISM.’
