Memorial Resistance (Armée Secret) Ile Monsin

This memorial was erected in commemoration of 23 members of the Belgian underground secret army, the Resistance. Le AS, L'Armée Secrète.

At this bridge on September 7th 1944 at 2 o'clock in the moring, 23 men of unit C.T. 11 of the of the secret undergrond Belgian Army, the resistance, survivors of the tragedy at the village of Fôret (Trooz). They were assassinated by the occupying force. Ordered by Germand commander Strauch.

The chateau of Fôret (Trooz) was a rallypoint of the AS (Armée Secrète), the Secret Army. Due to shortage of weapons they were inadequately equipped for battle. At September 3rd 1944 the commanders of the AS issuerd orders to leave positions. Unfortunately this order did not reach all members. At this point the US army was approaching and advancing in the direction of the city of Liège.The German army was ever since D-day in retreat. This was no more then 3 months earlier.

On September 6th they were under atack of German troops. in this battle 36 members of the AS were killed in action. 23 members were taken prisoner and transported to the Isle of Monsin at the city Liège. This was 15 km to the north from the village of Fôret.

The German commander Strauch ordered their execution. The body were to be found until 1946 in the river Meuse.

This memorial is related to the monument at Fôret where the
battle took place.
