Monument Flood Victims 17 May 1943

After the Eder Dam was breached by Lancaster bombers on 17 May 1943, a flood caused death and destruction in the region. The village of Affoldern was almost completely wiped out and 13 people lost their lives.

This monument commemorates those victims. The bronze statue depicts a mother dying in the floodwaters. She is still holding her child up in terror, while she herself is swallowed up by the water.
