Lunette
A lunette is a small fortification in the shape of a crescent moon, a name derived from the French word lune (moon). The structure has four sides: two sloping, outward-facing faces, and two rearward-facing flanks. The back, often open, is known as the keel.
History
The Vughtse Lunetten are eight historic fortifications built between 1844 and 1848 to protect 's-Hertogenbosch. Designed as forward defenses for Fort Isabella, they played a key role in Dutch military strategy after the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Within twenty years of completion, the defence policy was halted, but in 1874 it was decided to preserve the lunettes despite the abolition of the Defence Line 's-Hertogenbosch.
Though Lunet VII has vanished due to urban development, the remaining structures are part of the Zuiderwaterlinie, repurposed for recreation and education. Many are accessible via walking trails, offering visitors a glimpse into military history.
