The Tienakker Monastery in Wijchen was founded in 1855 by the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Lucia and was put into use from that moment on.
During the Second World War, the monastery had several functions. It was requisitioned by the German Wehrmacht and served as a shelter for the sick from the Saint Joseph Institute and for refugees from Nijmegen.
In September 1944, Operation Market Garden began, an Allied attempt to conquer the bridges over the Maas, Waal and Rhine. Wijchen was liberated during that operation. British troops set up their headquarters in the monastery, after which both British and American soldiers used the building.
