War memorial Breedeweg Groesbeek

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, a remarkable wooden statue was unveiled in Breedeweg. The artwork has found a permanent home in the niche of the church tower — a space that had stood empty for decades, its original purpose long forgotten. Until now, no one knew for certain what had once occupied the niche.

This new statue is not just a piece of art. It was discovered in the rubble of a destroyed German castle after World War II, carrying with it a quiet mystery that remained unresolved for years. Now, it returns with a renewed sense of purpose — a tangible bridge between the past and the present.

The statue depicts a bowed human figure, the head tucked between the shoulders, hands folded protectively in the lap. Carved into the chest are subtle markings — small symbols representing the villages and people affected by the war.

The artwork commemorates the wartime suffering of the local population, yet it is more than a symbol of sorrow. It also represents resilience, hope, and the power of remembrance. In silence, it speaks to all who pass by — of what once was, but also of what endures: connection, recovery, and the courage to move forward.

With the placement of this statue, the niche in the church tower finally regains meaning after all these years. It stands as a quiet yet powerful tribute to what was lost, and as a lasting reminder of the strength of community and hope.
