The Oranje-Nassau Barracks were built between 1810 and 1813 by order of Napoleon to house 2,400 soldiers. After the French withdrawal in 1813, the building was given its current name, and the French coats of arms were replaced by Dutch symbols.
During World War II, the barracks were used by Luftgaukommando Holland, including for military inspections and parachute training in 1942. The Dutch army finally left the barracks in 1987, after they were designated a national monument in 1970.
