Built as the fourth HBS (higher secondary school) for boys. Six classrooms per floor; downstairs, among other things, a reading room, gymnasium, and caretaker's quarters. The school had many Jewish students.
In 1938, the first Montessori-ULO (university education) in Amsterdam was temporarily established there, but moved to Tweede Boerhaavestraat a year later. When the war broke out, the Derde Vijf (Third Five) stood here with 25 teachers and approximately 360 students.
During World War II, the building was used by the Luftgaukommando Holland (Luftgau Command Holland) to billet soldiers. Many Jewish students did not survive the war.
