The Maria Grotto in Baarschot was built in 1945 by the people of Baarschot out of gratitude for the fact that there were no fatalities in Baarschot during the Second World War. The grotto was built from boulders found in the forests of Utrecht. On August 15, 1945, the feast of the Assumption of Mary, the grotto was consecrated by Father Fidentius van Beers, assistant to Pastor Van der Linden. Every year on the first Sunday in May and on the Assumption of Mary, a prayer service is held. In the front of the grotto, a plaque is embedded with the text:
QUEEN OF PEACE
AS YOU PROTECTED US WHEN WE FOUGHT
SO PROTECT US TODAY.
3-10-1944.
