Stelling van Amsterdam - Batterij aan de IJweg

The battery on the IJweg in Haarlemmermeer was part of the defensive line within the Defence Line of Amsterdam. It served to defend the IJweg with flanking fire.

In 1913 and 1914, the garrison consisted of 37 and 33 men, respectively. The armament is recorded in the 1910 report.

Access was via the defensive line. There were no outbuildings or moat; the battery was situated between the front and rear canals. The structure was bombproof.

In 1944, the German occupying forces began demolition for metal extraction, but this was halted by the Allied advance. Only the front building with its powder magazines remained and now bears the artwork "The Binoculars." The rest has largely disappeared; concrete remains are still visible underground.

The battery on Sloterweg is the only recognizable example of this type. The defensive line and infrastructure have been preserved; the front side has been built up and developed as a recreational area.
