Sergeant Robert Joseph “Bob” Niland, D Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, died here on June 6, 1944. Together with James Kelly, they attempted to halt the German advance while his company withdrew from Neuville-au-Plain. He was killed behind his machine gun, while Corporal James Kelly survived. There is nothing to see at the site itself, but documents have revealed the location of his death.
