Cunera Church Rhenen

The Cunerakerk has endured quite a bit of misfortune. In 1897, the tower burned down, after which a complete restoration was undertaken. The tower was then given a modified crown by Pierre Cuypers. During a subsequent restoration in 1934, the roof of the church went up in flames. While the damage was being repaired, part of the vault collapsed. Subsequently, both the church and the tower were severely damaged by the violence of war in 1940 and again in 1945. This was also repaired, but with such poor-quality materials that the tower had to be put back in scaffolding in 1968.

On the façade, there is a plaque commemorating the 8th Infantry Regiment, which fought on the Gubbeline in May 1940.
