Jewish Cemetery Schönhauser Allee

This Jewish cemetery was inaugurated in 1872 and for fifty years it was the only one in Berlin. It contains nearly 25,000 graves, some in poor condition. Metalwork was looted by the Nazis to be used as raw material for the arms industry.

The site contains the hiding place of deserters or opponents of the war. After they were discovered by the SS during the last days of the war in 1945, they were hung from trees on the spot. A plaque commemorates their fate.

The supervised cemetery is freely accessible during the day, except on Saturday (Sabbath) and Sunday. Head covering for men is mandatory and available.
