The Browning HQ Monument is located on the Koningin Wilhelminaweg in Groesbeek, Gelderland. It commemorates the landing of the British Airborne Corps headquarters under the command of General Frederick 'Boy' Browning on 17 September 1944 during Operation Market Garden. The headquarters arrived by Horsa gliders at a landing zone between the Bruuksestraat and the Breedeweg, near the current location of the monument.
The monument, unveiled on 16 September 1990, consists of a memorial stone with a black marble plaque on which a Pegasus (the emblem of the Airborne Division) and a glider are depicted. The text on the plaque reads:
“With Horsa gliders as winged horses, the British Airborne Corps headquarters under Gen. ‘Boy’ Browning landed here on 17 September 1944. Visitor, let love give you wings to be where you are needed.”
The monument was designed by Teun van Grinsven and G. Thuring and was unveiled by mayor Van Gils, together with several veterans. On 22 April 1992, the memorial was symbolically transferred to the municipality of Groesbeek.
The monument is an important part of the Airborne Walking Trail and forms a meaningful stop on the route that commemorates the Allied advance through the region.
