Monument Massacre of Kontomari

Kurt Student commanded after the Battle of Crete for reprisals. Because the civilians should fought on the side of the Allies. Kontomari was one of the places of reprisals. On the second of June the troops of the 3th Battalion of the Luftlande-Sturm-Regiment surrounded the village of Kontomari. The Germans took all the men between 18 and 50 years to the olive trees and executed them. According to the Germans, there were 23 people killed but other sources said 60 men were killed. The village has been destroyed by the Germans after the reprisal.
The monument has been erected in 1999, 58 years after this happened.
