At the Oostplein is the Marines memorial. The monument stands on the opposite site of the former marine barracks which were destroyed in may 1940 by a German bombing raid. The marines who had fought in May 1940 for the city of Rotterdam are remembered in this way. The monument was made by Titus Leeser and was unveiled on 5 july 1963 by Prince Bernhard.
