German Ziegler Bunker Slaaktestraat

The Ziegler bunker in the Slaaktestraat dates from the First World War. Named after its engineer, it was built by the German Marine Corps between 1915 and 1917. Because of its shape, it is also known as the Viking ship. The bunker is about 21 m long and 6 m wide, the thickness of the walls is about 1.20 m. During the war there was a bush here indicated on British military maps as Wood 16, on German as Bataillonswald. The North-East side was the rear for the Germans, the large opening in the middle was used for light signals. After capture by the British, the situation was reversed: the rear now became the front and the front became the entrance for the British soldiers.

You can read a nice article about the bunker on wo1.be.

More bunker remains can be found in the fields behind the bunker.
