This memorial commerates 5 resistance fighters who were executed here on 3 September 1944.
On 16 August 1944, an act of sabotage against a factory in Calais led to a harsh response from the German occupiers. Five young men were arrested, tortured and secretly executed in the citadel. Their burial place remained hidden until 1947. Interrogations of German prisoners, including Oberleutnant Albin Kellner, revealed the location of the burial site in the ruins of the citadel. On 11 October 1947, after extensive excavation work, the bodies were recovered and identified on the basis of personal belongings.
The five were named:
Bodechon, Jean - 18 years old
Gouverneur, Fernand - 21 years old
Le Gal, Roland - 20 years old
Legros, Alfred - 24 years old
Véron, Alfred - 20 years old
