Monument Canadian Soldiers Hooghalen

On 12 April 1945, Canadian troops advanced from Hoogeveen to Assen. At Hooghalen, they encountered German resistance. There was heavy fighting, six Canadians were killed and two tanks were lost. The six fallen Canadians were temporarily buried side by side in Hooghalen. They were later reburied at the Canadian Cemeteries in Holten and Groesbeek.

This monument was erected in memory of these six Canadian soldiers who were killed here during the liberation of the village:

H. Carson,
A.L. Chambers,
V.J. Chevalier,
R.W. Finch,
F.W. Lockinger
W.J. MacDonald.
