Memorial 'de Korenbloem'

The text on the plaque:

COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE YOUNG ZIONISTS WHO USED THIS FORMER COFFEE HOUSE "DE KORENBLOEM" [THE CORNFLOWER] AS A MEETING PLACE. THIS COFFEE HOUSE WAS ALSO AN ASSEMBLY POINT FOR JEWISH FELLOW CITIZENS WHO WERE TRANSPORTED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
ONLY FEW OF THEM SURVIVED THE WAR.

A second plaque has been placed under the first plaque. The text reads:

Before the restoration of the Noordenbergkwartier in the early 1980s, the coffee house "De Korenbloem" stood on this spot

In the 1930s it was a
meeting place (Beth Chaloets) for young Jewish emigrants
and refugees (chalutsim: pioneers) from Eastern Europe and
Germany who were preparing for emigration to it
then Palestine. They were under the care of the
Deventer Association for Vocational Training of Palestine Pioneers
(founded by Ru Cohen in 1918). With help from this one
association they learned, in preparation for their emigration,
know the farming business at farmers in the vicinity of
Deventer. They came to the Korenbloem on Saturdays
together. Some also found shelter here.

Many of them took part in it during the occupation
resists. A large part of these young people became
murdered in the Nazi death camps. The coffee house was
also a gathering place for a short time during the occupation years
Jews summoned for deportation.
