Memorial AFC - Field Amsterdam

The Monument on the AFC (Amsterdamsche Football Club) ground in Amsterdam commemorates six of its members who fell in World War II and one victim who died in the East Indies in 1947.

Text on the Monument:

"G.J.E. SCHEEPENS - G. STRUYS (mz Struijs)
H. IMMIG - J.C.R. VAN EYK (m/z Eijk)
A.A. SCHEEPSTRA - R. CIJFER

FAITHFUL TO THE FATHERLAND
UNTIL DEATH

1940 - 1945

KILLED IN NED. EAST INDIES
1947 - A.J. VAN DER PIJL

THE FREEDOM OF THE MIND
TRANSCENDS TIME AND DEATH"

The monument has stood on the site since 1946. Back then, it was not known whether some members would return from the war. The name of A.J. van der Pijl, killed in 1947 was added later. The fact that many more members had perished had long been known and later research by AFC finally came up with 30 people. These names were published in the 2023 annual report and placed on a separate plaque next to the monument.
