Memorial Crossing Location Operation Berlin

On 25 September 1944 the Battle of Arnhem was lost. General Urquhart received the order to withdraw across the Rhine. Operation Berlin was the codename. About 2200 men were succesful in crossing the river. This memorial marks the spot where they were picked up.

The monument was erected in 2019 and stands on private land in a meadow on the banks of the Rhine. Every year, the crossing is commemorated with the “White Ribbon Mile”, which recalls the white ribbons that ran from the British headquarters in Hotel Hartenstein (Oosterbeek) to the Rhine on the night of 25-26 September 1944. It is possible to walk to the monument along the white ribbon for more than two weeks until 25 September.
