Mass Grave Slag van Spioenkop

After the Battle of Spioenkop, many of the fallen soldiers were buried in the shallow trenches where they died. These graves therefore give an indication of where the trenches were located at the time of the battle. On the mass graves are also private memorials and headstones.

The Battle of Spioenkop (Spion Kop) took place from 20 to 24 January 1900 between the Boer troops the South African Republic and the Orange Free State and British forces, during the campaign to relieve Ladysmith. The battle was won by the Boer. 243 Brits and 68 Boer were killed.
