Operation Chess was a small British Commando raid during WWII on the French coast near Ambleteuse in July 1941. Seventeen men from No. 12 Commando landed undetected, stayed ashore for an hour, and withdrew without capturing prisoners. Commander Sir Geoffrey Congreve was fatally wounded during the mission.
