Order of the Sun of Liberty

The Order of the Sun of Freedom (Pashto: د ازادی د امر) was a state decoration of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, established on October 16, 1981. It became the highest state honor until the creation of the Hero of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan title in 1986. It was awarded until 1992.

Purpose and Eligibility
The award was granted to citizens of Afghanistan and foreign nationals, including civilians and members of the armed forces, individuals, and collectives.

Recipients were recognized for:
- Outstanding achievements during the revolution
- Contributions to state affairs, politics, and the social sphere
- Efforts in strengthening brotherhood and cooperation among Afghan ethnic groups
- Advancing friendly relations and collaboration between Afghanistan and other countries

Design and Ribbon
The badge was a multi-pointed star with a diameter of 52mm, featuring a gilded national emblem of Afghanistan (17mm) at its center. The back was smooth, engraved with the order’s name and serial number. It was affixed to a metal pentagon plate, attached with a simple ring.
The ribbon was green, with narrow red edge stripes and black edges.

There may have been multiple versions of the decoration, differing in design and composition, requiring further research. Available information remains limited.
