Sir Bernard Henry Bourdillon was born in Tasmania, raised in England and South Africa, and educated at Tonbridge and Oxford. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1908, served in Iraq during the First World War, and later became Political Secretary to the High Commissioner in Baghdad.
In 1929 he transferred to the Colonial Service, first as Colonial Secretary of Ceylon, then as Governor of Uganda (1932–35) and Nigeria (1935–43). Known for siding with African interests against European abuses, he promoted greater African participation in government, supported reformist policies, and advanced ideas that foreshadowed Nigeria’s federal structure.
After retiring he served on development councils and charitable bodies, and held directorships with Barclays. He died in Jersey in 1948. Bourdillon Road in Lagos commemorates his name.
