His Knight's Cross recommendation reads as follows...
"On 25.2.1943 reports came from the lead elements of the reinforced Aufklärungs-Abteilung LSSAH that a strong enemy column was moving south towards the LAH's positions. SS-Sturmbannführer Max Wünsche, with the leader of the attached Kampfgruppe, took it upon himself (without orders from above) to conduct a comprehensive tank attack out of Jeremejewka towards the north and destroyed the following enemy equipment:
24 guns of 7.62cm (long)
13 guns of 7.62cm (short)
10 anti-tanks guns of 4.5cm
6 guns of 12.2cm
1 gun of 10.5cm
Numerous mortars, anti-tank rifles, machine guns, also 300-400 horses, ox and covered sleds, also 800-900 dead.
SS-Sturmbannführer Wünsche had not only destroyed this strong enemy column, but also provided the essential relief of the LSSAH units in the south. He displayed outstanding courage (his own tanks destroyed two 12.2cm guns) and strong leadership (5 dead and 14 wounded as his own losses) and deserves the higher award of the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross for proven worthiness."
