Biography

In 1939 John Meaker enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment
In 1941 he sailed to India and was put on the Officer Training School course at Mhow. He passed out in March 1942 as a Second Lieutenant with the Emergency Commission
He was posted at several courses and stations during the war in Iraq, India, Italy and Lebanon. He saw little action though.
After the war he was given a regual commission with the Royal Fuseliers. In 1950 ge resigned but re-enlisted in 1954 as a Corporal in the Army Ordonance Corps. In 1956, being a Sergeant, he volunteerd for the SAS but lost his stripes.
With the S.A.S. he received the General Service Medal (GSM) with the clasps Malaya and Arabian Peninsula.
In 1962 back to his substantive rank of Sergeant he transferred back to the Ordonance Corsp who at that time were in Singapore to earn the Campaign Service Medal (CSM) with the clasp Malay Peninsular. He left the Army in 1969.
