Citation:
"For heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the vicinity of Schevenhutte, Germany, 22 November to 30 November 1944. During this perion Private Spitzner repeatedly drove through heavy enemy artillery fire in delivering messages to forward machine gun and mortar positions after communications wires had been severed by hostile action. Many of the roads traversed had not been cleared of mines, which further increased the hazardous nature of his missions. He carried out each assigned task, courageously and faithfully, despite the ever present danger under which he operated. In addition to delivering messages he acted as a guide for ammunition parties which supplied the battalion with ammunition during the attack. Private Spitzner's exemplary courage and assiduous devotion to duty reflect credit upon himself and the military service."
