Biography

Bill Young was born on November 1, 1919, in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore Polytechnical Institute and Strayer Business College. As a Technical Sergeant, he was assigned to General Bradley's 12th U. S. Army Group in the European Theater of Operations from 1943 -1945. Attached to the 2nd British Army, 21st British Army Group, his assignment was to provide liaison information for the 21st and 12th Army Groups subsequent to "D-Day". He received the distinguished Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service in connection with this military operation and was awarded campaign medals for Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Following his active military duty, Bill had a distinguished working career as a Civil Engineer for the Facility Engineering Department at Fort George Meade retiring as Deputy Director. He continued his military service as an Army Reservist and retired with the rank of Major. Not ready to fully retire, Bill worked for Severn School for an additional 10 years as Director of Buildings and Grounds. In 2004, Bill received Charter Membership, a medal and Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Committee for the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum.
