Courage was educated at the Royal Naval Colleges Osborne and Dartmouth in 1914. He began his naval service on 15 January 1916, serving during the First World War.
Interwar Period
- 19 Jan 1934 – July 1935: Served aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean, gaining experience aboard one of the Royal Navy's premier battleships.

- Aug 1942: Posted to HMS Stag, the Royal Navy base at Port Said, Egypt, possibly coordinating Mediterranean operations.
- Feb 1943 – June 1944: No appointment listed; may have been recuperating, instructing, or serving in a confidential capacity. At some point, he served as commander Coastal Forces, Eastern Mediterranean.
Postwar Service
- 18 Sept 1944 – July 1945: Returned to HMS Queen Elizabeth as Executive Officer, contributing to postwar naval responsibilities.
- 22 Oct 1945 – April 1946: Final listed posting at HMS Europa, Royal Navy Patrol Service Central Depot in Lowestoft, before likely retirement.
