As a regimental doctor with the Royal Sussex Regiment, Thomas Reilly took part in the battles of Sidi Rezegh (December 1941), El Alamein (October 1942) and Wadi Akarit (April 1943). It was his actions during the latter battle that earned him the Military Cross. With this regiment, he was also involved in the Battle of Cassino in early 1944. He was promoted to major and served as deputy assistant director of the medical service of the 4th Indian Division.
