"As a deputy political commander of the advanced detachment of the landing party, Senior Lieutenant Kot was enlisted as a member of the landing force, whose mission was to land on Shumshu Island. When landing in the morning of August 18, 1945, he was one of the first who swam to the shore, in spite of the enemy's fire. At a critical moment of the battle, Kot led a company of submachine gunners after the death of the company commander, Senior Lieutenant A. Inozemtsev, and then, with a cry of "Communists, forward!", raised the moral of the fighters and launched an attack. The soldiers managed to hold the bridgehead during the heavy fighting and ensured the landing of the main forces of the division .
