Biography

Private Eric Newsam, 4626880 of A Company, the Duke of Wellington''s Regiment, and veteran of the North Africa campaign, was killed in the assault on Monte Cece in the evening of the 8th of October 1944.

Son of William and Mary Newsam, of Wilthorpe, Barnsley, Yorkshire.

His C.O. Maj. Huskisson wrote a letter to his mother stating "He was killed on the evening of the 8th October by machine-gun fire while taking part in our successful assault on Monte Ceco (sic), a 2500ft mountain vital to the enemy's gothic defences. He was buried near where he fell on the hill and his grave will eventually be moved to a military cemetary... We have lost a grand soldier and a great friend"
