On the 10.08.1944 Hauptmann Kedzia led a counterattack against enemy forces that had broken-in at the positions of his 6. Kompanie with only a few men from his staff and signals unit, in which he was able to retake the old German line.

Later, on the 20.08.1944, Kedzia and his Bataillon took the village of Kemmern in a coup-de-main after a relentless pursuit through primeval swamp terrain. In the process they destroyed an enemy battery in close combat, and later were able to make contact with elements of Panzergruppe Strachwitz. By this the connection between Heeresgruppe Nord and the rest of the German army was restored.

For these achievements Kedzia would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
