Awarded on:
January 13th, 1944
"At 0400 hrs on 9th September 1943, 8th Battalion Royal Fusiliers landed as part of 10 Corps in SALERNO BAY. There was a coastal battery which had not been neutralized. The Company in which 2/Lt Fields was serving was ordered to assault this position. This officer, at the head of his platoon, with complete disregard for his personal safety and showing a very high standard of leadership, charged the battery and the LMG posts round it, and personally inflicted casualties upon the enemy.

By this fine display of courage, 2/Lt Field largely contributed to the silencing of the battery, thus enabling the landing to continue unhindered by gunfire."
