This concrete observation post was built during the First World War as part of the defences of the New Dutch Waterline. The post is located at Fort Asperen and served as a lookout point to observe enemy movements and to monitor the inundation areas — strips of land that were flooded. Although the Netherlands remained neutral during the war, various fortifications were constructed or improved along the waterline as a precaution. The observation post is a good example of military engineering from that period and today it is a tangible reminder of the role of water as a means of defence in Dutch military strategy.
