Open Air Museum Arnhem

During the Second World War, the Open Air Museum was closed. After the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, the city center was evacuated and many Arnhemmers became homeless.

There were already monumental houses in the Open Air Museum during the Second World War.
To provide shelter for the homeless people of Arnhem, the collection was housed in a depot. The rumor of this safe haven spread like wildfire through the city.
Until January 1945, more than 600 homeless people found shelter in the museum. during this period, a raid took place between the homeless and even a firing squad. After the liberation, the Open Air Museum was restored because the bombings had also caused damage there.
After the recovery period, it was reopened to the public.

In the Open Air Museum you can see a number of memories from the First and Second World War.

For current visiting hours, please contact the museum.
