Japanese POW Amphitheater

WWII Japanese prisoners of war incarcerated at Guam Naval Station were assigned various masonry construction projects around the base. This type of construction technique was common in Japan during the 1930-40's. The Amphitheater was called "NOB Hill Bowl Theater" due to proximity to the Naval Operations Headquarters at the time. The structure occupied the entire slope of the hill and seated approximately 5,000 personnel. The Amphitheater was used well into the 50's and was then abandoned. The Amphitheater was lost to jungle until November of 1993 when it was found by U.S. Navy Seabees clearing the jungle. The Amphitheater is part of the Naval Base Guam Historic Trail (Naval Base access required).
