Information sign Battle for Beek

Opposite Hotel Spijker on the Rijksstraatweg 191 in Beek is a large informationsign with photos from the battle of Beek during Operation Market Garden. Parachutist from the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment dig themselves in at the Nieuwe Holleweg close to Kalorama. Here the first fights with the enemy take place.

On Mondat the 18th of September 1944 heavy fights take place in Beek city centre and Hotel Spijker is hit 16 times by American mortars. The following days the fierce fights continue between the American and German troops and the city centre changes from side several times.
