Kalorama Beek-Ubbergen

During the Second World War, the building at Nieuwe Holleweg 12 in Beek-Ubbergen, known as Kalorama, played a significant role. Kalorama was originally a sanatorium, founded in 1920 by the Brothers of Mercy of Saint John of God, aimed at caring for male tuberculosis patients. The complex included the Saint Joseph Pavilion, specially designed for these patients.

During Operation Market Garden in September 1944, Kalorama was used as a base by the American 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 82nd Airborne Division. Paratroopers dug in near Kalorama, along the Nieuwe Holleweg, and became involved in battles with German troops.

Today, Kalorama is still active as a healthcare institution and is a reminder of its rich history, both as a medical center and as a location of military significance during the war.
