Dutch War Graves R.K. Cemetery St. Clemens Nuenen

War Graves R.K. cemetery St. Clemens in Nuenen

Two registered graves behind the Clemens Church in Nuenen at Park 53.
There is something remarkable about both graves.

Block / row / number B01 040
- Adrianus Carolus Dekkers; b. 2-8-1923 / deceased. 27-4-1945.
It is remarkable that he did not die as a soldier, his registration is as a refrigerator mechanic. There is no other military item on his stone. We only know that he was arrested in 1944 and sent to Frankfurt am Main. Shortly before the liberation he was sent home and shortly afterwards died in Frankfurt.

Block / row / number D15 021
- Josef Antoon Smolders; b. 23-3-1905 / deceased. 11-5-1940, part 1-III-26 R.I.
On 11 May, the retreating soldiers on the Bredaseweg in Tilburg, between the mission house and Gilze, were attacked in a half-hour bombardment. Corporal Smolders is one of fourteen victims who were killed in this shelling.
His wife J. Loeffen never remarried and has been resting at his side in a very similar grave since 4-5-1991.
