Memorial Fallen 3rd Battalion Carabiniers-Cyclists

In the military camp of Lombardsijde there are nine monuments that pay tribute to regiments of the Belgian army and their fallen men.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Belgium started closing its barracks in West Germany. After their move, some regiments were housed in Lombardsijde, where most were later disbanded. The monuments in the camp are the last reminders of a piece of Belgian military history.

The monument to the Third Battalion of Karibiniers-Cyclists pays tribute to the men who died in the Second World War and the war in Korea and stood in the barracks of Euskirchen where the battalion was stationed before they came to Belgium.

The Third Regiment Karabiniers-Wielrijders was founded in March 1937 in the Beverlo camp.
At the start of the Eight-Day Campaign 3Cy was deployed behind the Ourthe near Somme-Leuze. As the battle progressed they went to Flanders and took positions on the Western Scheldt and the Leopold Canal. At the time of the capitulation they were in Bruges.
During the Eighteen Days Campaign 9 non-commissioned officers and Cyclists were killed in the 3Cy.

In 1951 the 3rd Battalion Karabiniers-Cyclists was re-established and was stationed in Euskirchen (West Germany) until 1969 as an armored infantry battalion. From February 1969 until its dissolution in September 1970 it was stationed in Lombardsijde.

The current plaque on the monument is a copy, the original (photo 4) is in the army museum of Leopoldsburg.
