Memorial Moroccan

Hidden in the forest is the memorial for the Spahi who died on May 11, 1940.

"Here fell on May 11, 1940
at the service of France
to save Belgium
and buried here
a Moroccan Spahi
known to God -
He was the first to give his life
among the riders
of the 2nd rgt. of the Moroccan Spahis
and the 2nd rgt. of the Algerian Spahis
of the 3rd Brigade (Col. Marc)
on May 15, 1940
immortalized the city of Horgne. "

Above it hangs a 2nd plate:
This Spahi was identified in 1999
as being Mohamed ben Asmar "

Spahis were light cavalry regiments of the French army recruited mainly from the indigenous people of Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
On May 11, the 2nd Rgt. Algerians close to Mirwart, Transinne and Daverdisse.
The 2nd rgt. Moroccan Spahis was in the Saint-Hubert and Maissin region.
Every year in Saint-Hubert, a memorial ceremony is held in tribute to the Spahis, warriors of 1940, who fought for our freedom on May 10 in the Wellin and Saint-Hubert region.
